Kingdom Centre & Sky Bridge

The view from the top of Olaya

Kingdom Centre, completed in 2002, is the building that put Riyadh on the skyline map: a 302-metre tower whose upper third is an open parabolic arch, often compared to a bottle opener. Because local rules at the time limited the number of occupied floors, the architects made the top a sculpture instead — and ran a 65-metre Sky Bridge across the opening.

The tower stands in the middle of Olaya, the commercial spine of the city between King Fahd Road and Olaya Street. A little to the south rises its older rival, Al Faisaliah Tower, completed in 2000: a tapering 267-metre pyramid designed by Foster + Partners, with a glass-and-gold globe near the summit that holds a restaurant.

Cross the Sky Bridge

Two lifts take you up to the enclosed bridge at around 300 metres. To the north you look along King Fahd Road towards the towers of KAFD; in every other direction the low-rise city runs out to the desert. Arrive about 45 minutes before sunset to see it both in daylight and lit up.

Shop and eat in the mall below

The podium holds a three-storey mall of mostly upmarket brands, plus restaurants and cafés. It is a comfortable place to wait for your time slot or cool off afterwards.

See Al Faisaliah from the globe

Al Faisaliah’s golden globe has housed a restaurant with a different, more intimate view over Olaya. Venues and booking rules change, so check what is currently operating.

How to get to Kingdom Centre & Sky Bridge

  • By metro: the Blue Line runs along Olaya Street and King Fahd Road, with stations within walking distance of both towers.

Insider tips

  • Sky Bridge tickets are sold at the desk in the mall and online; prices and hours change, and sunset slots sell out on weekends.
  • Haze and dust are common, especially in spring and summer. A clear winter evening gives the best views.
  • On Fridays the Sky Bridge has typically opened only in the late afternoon.
  • The bridge is fully enclosed and feels solid, but the lifts and the height are not for everyone.
